We have been busy working on an animal research project. Students each have a different animal. They checked out books (if one was available) and searched the internet for information about their animal. They are writing the research paper from the information they found. There are 2 assignments to complete. The first one is an animal flip book. We did all of the work at school - it was to be corrected at home and returned so they could complete a final copy. The second assignment is a research paper. We have been working on that at school as well. It is 5 paragraphs, with 3-5 sentences in each. All of the information is in the research that they have already done. All they need is some help putting it into complete sentences with correct grammar. you should see a green folder come home. Everything should be in it. The green folder and all of the information needs to be returned each day.
We have finished up multiplication and division in our whole group math lessons and are now into fractions. Fractions are a new concept in third grade, though some have some foundational understandings as our second grade teachers did a nice job introducing fractions during their math win classes last year. We will be learning the basics of how to identify fractions, fractions of a set, using a number line to identify fractions, comparing fractions, and finding equivalent fractions. Please continue to work on basic multiplication facts as all students need to have the basic facts memorized by the end of the school year. HOMEWORK Please encourage your child to turn in their reading logs this week. It is on the back of the newsletter that will be coming home tomorrow, as well a link in the newsletter section of this website. This week we have a reading log that is due on Friday. It is on the back of the newsletter that your child should bring home tomorrow. It is also accessible by clicking the 'more' button on the top right, go to 'newsletters' and then find the one dated 1-23-17.
I will talk to the kids tomorrow about the reading log. It is their responsibility to get this done and returned, however, a little nudge from you would help :). We are working on taking responsibility in all academic areas. Welcome to a new week! Hopefully your weekend was restful!
Math I really need your help. I have several students that are not proficient in multiplication. At school we sing multiplication song, watch videos, and work on fact fluency with music. Students have learned how multiplication works. They still need to practice at home. Multiplication fluency is incredibly important. Everything we do from here on uses multiplication. Thank you!!!! Spelling and Vocabulary *This week there are 2 spelling lists- it isn't a short week. We work on both spelling and vocabulary during the week. Misc. Around this time of year supplies begin to dwindle. White glue, composition notebooks, scissors, crayons, pencils, etc..... Check with your child to see what they need. Last Monday we had RIF (Reading is Fundamental), each student got a free book that they got to keep and enjoy. In math we started chapter 9 which focused on using properties of multiplication. In chapter 9 students are learning about multiplying three factors, and how to break down a multiplication problem using the distributive property.
I will let you know when the field trip is rescheduled. Spelling: Last weeks test will be given tomorrow (Tuesday). There will be spelling this week, however no challenge list due to the short week. Conferences February 15th and 16th Happy New Year!!!! This week we are going to review muliplication and division facts. Chapter 8 is touched on - however most of the pages will come home. The papers are not homework. If you want to work through them you can - I don't want them back.
Chapter 9 focuses on making sense of problems and perservering to solve them, reasoning, and being able to construct and critique the reasoning of others. If your child doesn't know the multiplication facts to 10, they need to work on it at home. Everything from here assumes they know their facts. SPELLING No spelling or vocabulary this week. Field Trip Next Friday we are going to Prarie Fire Natural History Museum. The bus will leave here at about 8:45 and return at approximately 2:00. All students will need a sack lunch with a drink. Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Larson are riding the bus - all other parents are welcome to carpool and follow the bus to the museum. Each parent attending will have to pay $5.50 when we get to the museum. Please make sure kids have coats and tennis shoes on. Math Test I am sending the math test home today. If your child is unhappy with the score - correct and return to me and I will add half of the points missed to the grade. This test score will be the first grade for the 3rd quarter. Please return it to me by Friday. |
