On December 15 all third grade classes will be traveling far
and wide to visit many different countries and learn about their
holiday traditions as part of our geography unit. The classes
will travel to each of the teachers that day and learn about a
different country in each continent. They will get to make a
small craft representative of a holiday tradtion. It is a fun and
informative day.
On the last day of school, December 16th, we will have a
pajama day as we will be finishing a Polar Express
unit. On that day we will watch the Polar Express and drink
hot chocolate.
In math we have been learning how to use known facts to
multiply unknown facts. For example 4x8= (2x8)+(2x8).
We break apart (or decompose) one of the factors into
smaller "known" facts. Then multiply the smaller facts and
add them together. While we are still learning and memorizing
basic facts, this strategy gives the students another way to
solve a multiplication problem. This also introduces us to the
distributive property of multiplication which we will be working
on after Christmas break.
